WASHINGTON, DC (Aug 27, 2008) USSoccerPlayers -- Here we are a day into CONCACAF Champions League preliminaries and Major League Soccer trails both of their series. Can the United Soccer League do any better?
Champs League Night Two
The Montreal Impact and the Puerto Rico Islanders get to push the USL-1 brand of pro soccer tonight in CONCACAF Champions League preliminary action (8pm and 10pm on Fox Soccer Channel). Montreal hosts Nicaragua's Real Esteli and Puerto Rico visits Costa Rica to face LD Alajuelense.
Advantage Montreal, who have already gotten past Toronto FC and should be all set to follow the Cruz Azul example and unload at home. It's easy enough to say after all three of last night's games ran to form, but one expects this ends up being who scores the most at home, likely dropping the road game. Well, except for Cruz Azul and likely UNAM Pumas.
Montreal winning would be easier for those committed MLS fans to take simply because they're home first. Puerto Rico getting a result away to a stronger team than either of the MLS opponents, not so much.
Hiring Opinion
Former Chicago Fire president and current Chicago WPS president Peter Wilt decided for candid with his take on his old club's latest hire:
"While most of the city and Bears representatives were polite, though a bit patronizing, Dave seemed bent on putting the Fire in its place with condescending comments. At one point during the meeting, Greeley's relentless disparagement of soccer and the Fire forced AEG's Bill Peterson and me to swear at him (as I recall, it began with an "f" and ended with a "u"), get up from the table and head for the door."
Hey now.
